In memoriam Peter Hermann: Near-relegation, Champions League, new clubs and a return to Bayer 04

In 1996, Bayer 04 with Peter Hermann narrowly avoided relegation. What followed was a change of manager that was to prove a test of Hermann’s patience. Until, under Berti Vogts and Klaus Toppmöller, he led the club to new heights: the ‘vice-triple’ and the Champions League final. But things were to remain turbulent, for that exceptional season was followed by another near-relegation – and for Peter Hermann, who had always remained loyal to Bayer 04, the first signs of a move to another club began to emerge.

In the summer of 2008, Peter Hermann left Bayer 04 for the first time. He initially moved to Nürnberg, then joined Jupp Heynckes, with whom he enjoyed tremendous success. In Leverkusen, they led Bayer 04 to a long unbeaten run; in Munich, the successful duo won every title there was to win. Peter next went on to Schalke, then to Düsseldorf and finally to HSV in Hamburg. Before that, whilst working as assistant coach for the DFB’s youth teams, he received another call from his sporting home, Leverkusen.
