Way back in 1905 hockey was just finding its roots as an organized sport in rural Canada. It was in a small town near Ottawa that the first fatality, death or murder occured. Alcide Laurin was the first recorded player to be killed during an organized game of hockey. His death at the hands of Allan Loney wasn't just an accident or a moment of violence in hockey. It moved to a murder and manslaughter charge and brought the entirety of hockey in Canada into the court room. Hockey was literally on trial.
