Bromley 2-2 Gillingham: Fighting back for a point
Episode Notes
Gillingham games in front of the Sky cameras tend to go badly, and 20 minutes into their away game at Bromley on Saturday night, it seemed like an all-too familiar scene. The Gills were 2-0 down and looking all over the place at the back.
But, after doing enough to avoid further damage, they came out in the second half and produced a much-improved display as they rolled up their sleeves and fought back into a game that looked dead and buried earlier in the afternoon.
Josh Andrews’ spin move gave him space to head a Remeao Hutton throw into the far corner, and a charging stoppage-time run in behind the Bromley defence by new signing Garath McCleary led to the referee giving the Gills a generous penalty. After being denied a clear pen for a blatant shirt-pull on Andy Smith in the first half, it seemed like an example of decisions evening themselves out – but it was a very fortunate call.
Sam Vokes calmed the situation by holding on to the ball and giving every indication that he’d be the one taking the spot-kick. But, when the moment came, he tossed the ball to Max Clark, who smashed the penalty into the net to send the travelling Gills contingent crazy.
It was a mad game, and one that could so easily have ended in the Gills’ first loss this season. But in the end, that now-familiar fighting spirit and “refuse to lose” mentality helped drag us back into the game and we came away with a hard-earned point.
In the latest episode of The ME7 Podcast, host James Hawkins is joined by fellow Gills fans Kris and Emlyn as they recap the weekend’s events as the Gills sit top of League Two, undefeated in 19 games.
