Ep. 339 Larry Shyatt, The Shyatt Clinic

In this week's episode, Coach Brendan Suhr is joined by Larry Shyatt — founder of the Shyatt Clinic, longtime college headcoach, and one of the great givers in the profession. The episode opens with a full rundown of this year's Shyatt Clinic in Charlotte, and all of those clinic videos are live now onCoaching U+.

Shyatt then walks through a coaching life that began with a graduate assistant job at Utah and a Volkswagen Rabbit driven from Cleveland to Salt Lake City, then ran through Cleveland State, New Mexico, Providence, Clemson, Wyoming, Florida, and finally the Dallas Mavericks bench. He's candid about being fired in the ACC, about not being ready the first time he was a head coach, and about why he walked away from years and money left on his Wyoming contract to protect his staff.

From there the two get into the craft. Shyatt explains where his defensive philosophy came from, why he built teams to shorten games rather than chase possessions, and the rope drill he used to make defensive positioning visible to his players. He and Suhr also discuss what he learned from hall of famers Rick Barnes and Billy Donovan, and why the question that matters most in coaching is whether you're a giver or a taker.
