MSU Falls to Nebraska 58-56 in Lincoln

January 2, 2026: Well, we are clearly back to Big Ten play as Michigan State found itself in a defensive slugfest in Lincoln where they lost 58-56 to the 15th ranked Cornhuskers. Despite turning the ball over 19 times, the Spartans actually had a chance to steal this game even up 3 with under two minutes to go. But Nebraska made just enough shots and MSU continued to have trouble hanging onto the ball and fell just short.

Jaxon Kohler was sensational in the game with 19 points and 11 rebounds and 5-6 from three. Jeremy Fears chipped in 14 with 7 assists and was a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line. But it just wasn’t enough and Michigan State couldn’t contain 7th year senior, Mast from Nebraska enough as he finished with 19 points and was 6-13 from three with 7 rebounds.

Michigan State, however, is no slouch either as they enter the game with a 12-1 record and their one loss to top 5 ranked Duke. MSU has played a true road game at Penn State but this will obviously be a different sort of challenge with an historically live crowd and plenty on the line. Nebraska is a solid team ranked inside the top 40 in both offense and defense with their only weaknesses being their relatively poor 3 point shooting and middling rebounding.

This might be a game where the Spartans need to continue to find their range from 3 where they are averaging 45% away from the Breslin Center. Also, they probably need to get going on transition and get some second chance points to have a realistic opportunity to steal a Big Ten road win.
