India v West Indies 3rd ODI Preview | PowettPlay Podcast

On the latest episode of the PowettPlay Podcast, hosts Jordan Shannon and Kieran Powell preview the 3rd ODI between India and West Indies, focusing on the tactical changes they believe could help the Caribbean side respond after a difficult start to the series.

The discussion begins with possible changes to the West Indies batting line-up, including a debate around Keacy Carty’s place in the XI and whether Jewel Andrew should be given an opportunity at the top of the order. Jordan and Kieran explore how a refreshed opening combination involving Andrew, John Campbell and captain Shai Hope could give West Indies a more aggressive platform, while also considering whether Roston Chase could offer greater stability if moved up to number four.

Attention then turns to the bowling attack and the need to disrupt India’s control of the powerplay overs. The hosts discuss whether Alzarri Joseph should be rested and put forward the idea of using Gudakesh Motie with the new ball as a tactical surprise. By constantly rotating the attack and changing the type of bowling India face, the aim would be to prevent the Indian batters from settling into the comfortable rhythm they have enjoyed so far in the series.

The episode also looks beyond the immediate India tour and towards the bigger challenge facing West Indies ODI cricket preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in South Africa and Namibia. Jordan and Kieran discuss why early preparation will be essential and argue that training camps should replicate the conditions the players are likely to encounter, including using venues such as St Lucia where greener, more seam-friendly surfaces can provide more relevant preparation than flat Caribbean pitches.

Experience also becomes a major talking point, with the hosts highlighting the potential value of players such as Jason Holder when West Indies move into more challenging overseas conditions. His knowledge of different surfaces, ability with both bat and ball and experience in pressure situations could become increasingly important as the team prepares for qualification cricket.

With selection, tactics and long-term planning all under the microscope, Jordan and Kieran ask whether West Indies should use the 3rd ODI against India to make bold changes and begin shaping the squad they want to take into the World Cup qualification campaign.

Should Jewel Andrew come into the XI? Could Gudakesh Motie opening the bowling give India something different to think about? And should experienced players such as Jason Holder be central to West Indies’ plans for South Africa and Namibia?
